Most laser hair removal systems and IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) hair removal systems have built in eye protection features. Eyes Damage Basic Safety Tips
Never look directly at the laser light – There is no need for complicated explanation about laser light and IPL, both are high energy light pulses, which have bright light on different spectrum levels. Just like you will never look directly at the sun, so you should avoid looking directly into the laser beam or the xenon flash. Looking directly at the laser light beam, or emitting it toward the eyes can cause severe sight damage and even blindness!
Never use a home system too close to the eyes - The user guide for each system will say it very clearly, ALL of the systems intended for personal home use are NOT allowed to be used close to the eyes! This means NO eyebrow laser hair removal at home!!
Use Laser Systems Which Have Eye Protection Features
Not all the manufacturers have invested in eye safety. But most of the systems you will find online will have some kind of protection to prevent eye damage risks. The main feature you should be looking for in an home IPL or laser system is the ‘Skin-Contact-Sensor’.
This sensor locks the laser system (or IPL) if the applicator is not firmly touching the treated skin. This prevents the system from pulsing a laser beam into the eyes or even by accident.
Here are the best selling IPL and laser systems, which have a ‘skin touch’ safety lock implemented in their systems:
- The TRIA Laser
- The Silk’n systems – SensEpil and the Flash & Go.
- The Syneron – Me my Elos system
- Remington IPL6000USA I light Pro
- The Espila IPL System by BNB
- and more…
The professional systems do not use the ‘Skin Contact’ sensor, because it slows down the treatment, and when used by a professional partitioner the liability is not on the manufacturer but the place which use it.
Note that the DM7000 laser hair removal is sold as a personal hair removal system, but it is intended for professional use, and does not have the skin touch sensor lock. The DM7000 laser is used 1 inch above the skin for best results!
Use Eye Damage Protection Gear
When using the IPL or laser systems the bright flash may be seen at the sides of the hand help applicator. This is not too dangerous but when doing a session with hundreds of such flashes, it can be safer to use protection dark glasses. The Espila IPL hair removal system adds a pair of eye protection glasses to each system which is shipped.
